Sambar Recipe

Sambar is a traditional South Indian dish that is generally served with rice, idli or dosa. It is made using toor daal and the combination of vegetables like bottle guard(Loki), pumpkin, carrot, beans, brinjal, drumsticks. You can choose any 2-3 vegetables of your choice. It is very easy to cook sambar at home. Here is step by step guide to cook sambar.

  • 200 gm Toor Daal
  • 1 Finely Choped Carrot
  • 1 Sliced Onion
  • 1 Finely Choped Tomato
  • 2 French Beans
  • 1/4 tbsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tbsp Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tbsp Garam Masala
  • 2 tbsp Sambar Masala
  • 1 tbsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Tamarind (Without Seeds)
  • 2 Glasses of Water
  • Salt to Taste
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 5-6 Curry Leaves
  • Pinch of Hing


  1. Prepare Tamarind juice by soaking 1 tbsp of tamarind into 1 cup of hot water. After 15 minutes stain it with a sieve.

  2. Add toor daal and mixed vegetables(onion, tomato, carrot, french beans) into the pressure cooker and put 2 glasses of water. Add all the spices and cover the lid. Wait for 3-4 whistles on high flame.

  3. In a separate pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds until they crack. Then add curry leaves and powdered hing.

  4. Open the lid of the cooker and mash vegetables with a ladle. Add this mixture to the pan. And cook for 10 minutes. Then add tamarind juice. Your sambar is ready to be served with Idli, dosa or rice.
